Mind the Gap Senior Thesis

Project Type
Poster & Book Design

Background
The achievement gap in the United States is an ongoing issue involving the inconsistency of education between different groups of people throughout the country. There is a national imbalance in opportunity as well as an unequal distribution of resources to neighborhoods occupied by households of varying incomes as well as a disparity in the funding distributed to school districts of differing racial populations. These resources, such as books, are powerful tools that benefit children and allow them to succeed academically. A simple solution would be to allocate funding from schools of a predominantly white population towards school districts of a higher minority population in order to minimize the segregation and increase opportunity. Only then can we make strides to forever closing this gap and have equal education nationwide once and for all.

Designs
Inspired by handwritten type. All display copy was written by hand and then digitized. The book features two separate  booklets that can be opened and their pages turned simultaneously. There is a physical gap between them in order to symbolize the metaphorical gap in the educational system.
